Going to a Fancy Dress Party as One of the Kray Twins

posted on 19 February 2012

A life of crime for me, at least when it comes to fancy dress costumes - I went to a recent party dressed as one of the Kray twins. Ronnie or Reggie? Niether and both, I left it up to the guests to make up their mind which one I was. In any case, it gave me a great opportunity to go to a party looking smart, and not ridiculous in some batman outfit (looking more like Del Boy than Adam West). In fact, I could see other guests who basically "went too far" - the frankensteins, the hunchbacks, the supermans. After the initial gimmick value of such costumes, you almost want them to go home and change into something else so you don't have to keep thinking how ridiculous they look. I think when it comes to fancy dress, it has to be subtle and not so overstated.

How to Be Stylish and Well-Traveled

My favorite fashion items are usually things that I pick up during my trips abroad - from occasion shoes to pashmunas. It’s an easy way to find unique items, especially accessories that may not be as popular in the United States. In South Korea, I amassed an impressive collection of girly headbands, and I flew out of Australia wearing a very jaunty little teal hat from an adorable vintage shop. I love nothing more than when people ask me where I got my most treasured items. My favorite leather jacket? It’s from Luxembourg. Oh, you admire my funky earrings? Sorry, I got them in Costa Rica. Buying clothing overseas is an easy way to ensure that my style is both distinctive and reminiscent of all of the wonderful places I’ve seen. Next time you’ve hopped on a plane heading for a foreign country, take a few minutes between the famous gardens and the must-see museum to explore a market or two. You may just find your new favorite piece.
